About Northeastern:

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern’s comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:

The Department of Communication Studies at the College of Art, Media, and Design (CAMD) invites highly qualified candidates to apply for an open-rank appointment as Department Chair, to commence on July 1, 2022. Outstanding candidates will be considered for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek candidates who understand and embrace the foundation of Communication Studies and Media Studies as disciplines that encompass the inquiry of communication across a broad range of contexts.

Our department, which includes the Program in Media and Screen Studies, is a vibrant community of scholars, practitioners, and students committed to excellence in research, creative work, and teaching within a broad framework of experiential education, community engagement, and hands-on video production. We offer a broad and flexible curriculum with two distinct majors and more than 20 combined majors. We have over 35 full-time faculty across our two degree areas of Communication Studies and Media and Screen Studies, with an enrollment of over 800 undergraduate students (including combined majors). As our dynamic and flexible curriculum expands, we welcome applicants who can offer a vision for our continued growth that aligns with and contributes to the strengths of the College of Arts, Media and Design and Northeastern University.

The College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) is a collaborative, diverse community, acting as a catalyst for research, inspiration, and discovery across the University. It brings together a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art+Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre, and is home to three interdisciplinary research centers: the Center for the Arts, the Center for Design, and the Center for Communication, Media Innovation, and Social Change.   (See: http://www.northeastern.edu/camd

Responsibilities:

The Chair is responsible for managing Department fiscal and administrative operations and providing effective leadership for faculty, staff, and students, with particular emphasis given to aligning the Department's mission with the goals of the College and University, leading program development and implementation, initiating and developing fund-raising alliances, and fostering faculty development. Other responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the ongoing success of our cooperative and experiential education.
  • Raising the profile of both our research and non tenure track faculty through mentorship and support for scholarly and professional work, including publications, external funding, and disciplinary awards.
  • Developing innovative graduate programming that builds on the excellence of our undergraduate curriculum and connects with graduate initiatives in CAMD and across the many research centers and institutes at Northeastern.
  • Expanding our curriculum by building connections across CAMD and with strategic initiatives across the University in health network science, environmental change, algorithmic and social justice, and innovations in media, communicating data, design, and new technologies.
  • Innovate our production curriculum and facilities in partnership with the Media Services Organization.
  • Collaborate closely with the CAMD Dean, the Dean’s office, and the other departmental chairs.
