About the Opportunity:

The Senior Domain Academic and Career Advisor is responsible for leadership and oversight of academic advising services and support for learners & academic program domains served by Northeastern’s College of Professional (CPS). Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising, he/she manages & leads a team of academic advising professionals serving diverse learner populations enrolled in CPS academic programs. S/he provide daily supervision of academic advisors using best-in-class practices, services, tools, and platforms to support learners’ academic needs and ensure learner success toward degree completion and career aspirations. S/he maintains an advising caseload and will take on operations & management responsibilities. The Senior Domain Academic and Career Advisor is the first tier of management support for advisors for questions or issues relating to their learner caseloads. Additionally, s/he is responsible for training new advisors and updating staff on policies/procedures relating to advising/academic departments and institutional partners. Further, s/he work with the director to provide staff training and recruitment, daily supervision, presence, operations, and staff professional development opportunities. Finally, working with the Director and other leadership, s/he plays a vital role in reviewing, refining, and improving strategic approaches and technological support for scalable, sustainable, and effective academic advising services for all CPS learners.

Responsibilities:

30% Leadership & Supervision:

  • Be willing and able to lead, engage and motivate team members. Actively demonstrate & support a positive team culture and support and carry out leadership’s goals and objectives.
  • Support processes for performance management and development to ensure measurable goals, clear expectations and solid direction for each team member.
  • Meet regularly with team members to assess needs, performance, adherence to goals and objectives, troubleshoots issues, and receive & provide timely and impactful feedback.
  • Plan for and support career and professional development opportunities for staff aligned with business needs
  • Lead and guide employee/team to develop new skills, knowledge and abilities that will enhance their work and development. Design, develop, and/or deliver staff training programs.
  • Plan, organize resources, assign and delegate activities and measure results to achieve organization’s expectations.
  • Manage change by providing the needed structure and transparent environment. Coach employee/team through changes that impact their day to day work to ensure positive and productive work culture.
  • Assist employees in navigating business processes and resolving issues.
  • Administer and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.

60% Caseload Management:

  • Act as the domain lead for learner populations in specific academic programs; work with the faculty and staff to ensure best-in-class academic advising for learners
  • Serve & support a domain-specific caseload of active registered learners each term/semester
  • Provide guidance and support to learners on their academic goals.
  • Interpret and explain academic policies and procedures to students
  • Advise learners on College curricular matters, complete entering student profiles, career action plans for all learners, and other academic and personal issues as they arise
  • Act as liaison between student and faculty in domain; respond to FACT warnings, troubleshoot student grievances, and monitor students’ academic progress through graduation
  • Work with Career Services team to prepare and support learners on career aspirations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

10% Communication & Collaboration:

  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with the Director of Academic Advising to ensure learner success and high-quality service and support for academic programs
  • Ensure timely and effective communication with academic domains, staff, and learner populations regarding policies, procedures, events, and other related information
  • Engage, communicate & collaborate with Deans, academic program staff, career services, regional campuses, and faculty to ensure a collaborative and responsive partnership

Qualifications:

Master’s degree; at least 4-6 years of experience in advising and/or counseling; strong administrative, organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Some late hours and weekend work is required. Some travel is required. Must have a track record of strong performance in academic and/or career support and services. Experience with mentoring, experiential services, career services, program development, student affairs, and assessment practices, preferred.

Additional attributes:

  • Previous management experience preferred
  • Have experience working with diverse student populations: transfer, adult learners, online, and international students
  • Be able to articulate his/her philosophy regarding academic advising and career services and provide evidence of being student-learning centered
  • Have strong organizational skills, with a particularly focus on prioritizing tasks, time management, and follow-through
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Be comfortable using multiple mediums to communicate with students, faculty, and staff members
  • Be able to exercise sound judgment to problem solve independently within organizational guidelines and policies
  • Be a creative team member, be able to take direction and work independently, possess strong change management skills, and be collaborative, supportive, and team-oriented.
  • Be flexible in work assignments and work hours (including being available some evenings and weekend);
  • Have strong technological skills and experience with multiple software platforms, including degree audit systems, student information systems, and customer relationship management systems.
