About the Opportunity:

U.S. News and World ranks Northeastern University 31 in Best Engineering Schools.  The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department ( is a successful, vibrant, and diverse academic enterprise within the College of Engineering at northeastern. MIE faculty include one National Academy member, 35% are professional society fellows, 35% are women and 38% Young Investigator Awardees. The MIE Department has annual research expenditures of ~$12M and is home to two research centers: (1) NSF Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing and (2) NSF/DHHS Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute. The department has rapidly grown in the last five (5) years and is currently comprised of 70 teaching and tenured/tenure-track faculty members and a co-op faculty team. Some of our core and multidisciplinary research areas include AI-Assisted Sustainable and Intelligent Manufacturing, Resilient and Sustainable Service Systems, Robotics, Mechanics, Multiphase/Multiscale Matter, Materials for the Future, Data-Driven Science and Engineering, Energy Systems, Networks and Complex Systems, Biomechanics/Mechanobiology, Human-Technology Integration, and Engineering Education. The department is also home to a large and highly talented student pool, currently enrolling over >150 PhD, >1,500 MS, and >1,400 BS students.  

Applicants will be considered at all ranks and are being sought in areas with emphases on multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and crosscutting activities. Faculty candidates in the broad research area of dynamical systems and control are being targeted, with a research focus on multi-agent network systems including, but not limited to: underwater, ground and aerial robotic systems; human-in-the-loop systems; mechatronics systems from novel sensors to actuator design; and intelligent manufacturing. It is expected that candidates leverage the fundamentals of control theory and ideally integrate model-based approaches with data-driven techniques to address pressing societal needs, for example, in security and health. A clear demonstration of this research focus with connections to advancing the Mechanical Engineering discipline is important.
