About the Opportunity:

The Assistant Dean for Professional Programs will be both a strategic and an operational leader: partnering with the Associate Dean of Professional Programs and Graduate Affairs to grow the College of Science’s graduate portfolio of programs while also overseeing a team focused on the sustained operations and growth of those programs. Specifically, the Assistant Dean will oversee Associate Directors in Professional Programs Operations, Graduate Student Services, and Academic Programming. A successful Assistant Dean will be able to work with academic leaders to launch new masters’ programs, expand existing masters’ programs, and provide both data analysis and operational oversight to the College portfolio of masters’ programs. The Assistant Dean will also be expected to plan and execute graduate student enrichment activities, inform College leadership on program trends through data analytics, and lead team efforts to ensure students are able to succeed in College graduate programs.


Management and Organization of Masters’ Programs: in collaboration with home departments, manages the administrative aspects of graduate program operations – in particular, professional masters’ programs – for COS and interdisciplinary programs assigned to the College, in Boston and throughout the Northeastern University global network. Lead and oversee a graduate student advising/student services team, as well as a professional programs administrative support group.

Recruitment and Enrollment Management: work with the Dean, Associate Dean for Professional Programs and Graduate Affairs, and department leadership to set enrollment targets by program on an annual basis and coordinate with department leadership and other relevant University partners on efforts to advertise, recruit, enroll, and retain the highest number of top quality graduate students possible for College of Science programs. Ensure timely decisions are being made by departments and applicants are being informed. With guidance from the Dean/Associate Dean(s), design and implement recruitment plans for domestic and global initiatives. Using institutional and College resources, provide enrollment trends and analysis, as well as recommendations on enrollment strategies to be implemented.

Program Development: working closely with the Associate Dean for Professional Programs and Graduate Affairs, the Assistant Dean is expected to coordinate and, at times, lead efforts to create new masters’ and PhD programs, expand existing offerings, and develop strategies to ensure the College has relevant offerings for prospective graduate students. This will include working with faculty leaders on the development of online course content and ensuring departments regularly update existing content in online offerings. Oversee curriculum documentation and other enrollment aspects of graduate programs that support and engage with the Registrar’s office and fulfill other student scheduling requirements.

Student Affairs: working collaboratively with academic departments, Associate Deans, and the Dean, the Assistant Dean will develop and administer academic policies and procedures for the College's graduate programs. Manage the process of ensuring that graduate students receive accurate, timely, and helpful information regarding policies and procedures within the College and the graduate academic programs. Inform Associate Dean of student conduct and disciplinary matters. Manage aspects of graduate student academic life, including (but not limited to) graduation clearance, program progression, and resolution of academic disputes.

Graduate Programs Data Analysis and Insight: working with the graduate affairs team, the Assistant Dean will closely monitor recruitment progress, enrollment, course hours, and other key metrics for College of Science graduate programs. The Assistant Dean will use this data and analysis to guide their own decision making, but also provide it upon request to Associate Deans and/or the Dean.


Master’s degree with six to eight years of applicable experience required. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and managerial skills required. Experience in a University setting with student affairs, admissions, and faculty relations required, preferably at PhD granting / research level institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated progression in a managerial position preferred.
