About Northeastern:

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern’s comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:

Under the Assistant Director of Career Development and Experiential Learning on the Bay Area Campuses and in conjunction with the experiential learning and career services staff within the Colleges, the Career Development Advisor will create and implement career programming, professional development, and experiential learning opportunities for all Bay Area learners. This individual is responsible for assisting students in securing appropriate experiential learning opportunities (co-ops, internships, projects, hackathons, etc.) across the Bay Area with a focus on technical and tech-adjacent opportunities. This role will advise and coach students individually and in groups throughout the job search and application process, with a focus on topics related to career development and employment search, including resume and cover letter development and review, interview techniques, and effective job search strategies. This will involve both industry and region-specific content, as well as incorporating career preparation curricula from partner colleges.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small but growing regional team that will be helping to build the career development and experiential learning function for Northeastern University within the Bay Area. This role will be supporting students in both the downtown San Francisco and downtown San Jose campuses; travel between the two campuses is required.

Preferred candidates for the Career Development Advisor position will have:

• Worked in a student/career-focused environment and have a professional background in experiential learning, preferably in the technology education space, AND/OR, worked as a technical recruiter, technical hiring manager, or in a similar function.

• An understanding of industry hiring and employment trends relevant to the Bay Area degree programs (e.g. computer science, data science, analytics, project management, information systems, etc.) and the ability to conduct independent research in these areas.

• Strong presentation and workshop facilitation skills.

• The ability to lead projects and navigate across university divisions; a detail-oriented multi-tasker.

• Strong communication skills and an interest in working in a highly collaborative role with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and external partners.

• Flexibility and an interest in wearing multiple hats; the Bay Area is a growing campus, so this role will require comfort with evolving priorities.

• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds; familiarity with work authorization processes in the US (CPT/OPT) a plus.

• Excellent skills in relationship building, event planning, marketing, public relations, and database management.

• Experience working with professional master’s students is preferred.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with at least 3-5 years' experience supporting career development at a higher education institution or job-focused training program (e.g., bootcamp/workforce development).

Additional attributes:

• Forward thinking and innovative, helping us realize the future of education in line with Northeastern’s strategic plan.

• Can connect with students from different cultures, backgrounds and lived experiences in person and virtually to help them become career ready and progress on their journey.

• Passion for networking and making new connections with regional employers.

• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with multiple audiences and maintain confidentiality around complex and sensitive issues for the purposes of compliance with applicable federal and state laws, as well as Northeastern guidelines.
