About the Opportunity:

The Institute for Chemical Imaging of Living Systems (CILS) is an exciting new initiative at Northeastern University in Boston. The mission of the institute is to develop new chemical detection modalities based upon nanosensor technologies that allow visualization and quantification of chemical processes in animals. The team is composed of 20 Northeastern faculty working to leverage emerging opportunities in nanoprobe development, advanced imaging modalities, probe delivery, in vivo electronics, and in vivo imaging.


The CILS Operations Director will develop and manage effective business and administrative operations needed to fulfill the CILS mission. Core responsibilities will include oversight of financial operations, budget and forecasting, programmatic operations for grant fulfillment, IT operations, strategic and personnel planning, as well as hiring and training. As a member of the CILS leadership team, the Operations Director will work with faculty members and coordinate university-wide resources to develop long-term operational strategies that strengthen the performance of CILS.


- Master’s degree and 5 to 7 years in business or higher education administration, or equivalent combination

- Previous experience managing a moderate to large department

- Superior knowledge of multiple operational functions and principles, including finance, customer service, production, and employee management

- Ability to streamline and implement new structures and roles that create speed, efficiency, and support business demands

- Strong working knowledge of STEM fields

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with budget and business plan development

- Proven ability to develop innovative solutions for increased productivity

- Masterful organizational, communication, and leadership skills, demonstrated by previous professional success
