About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University seeks an Associate Director for Experiential Integration for the Self-Authored Integrated Learning (SAIL) Initiative to contribute to its integrative vision for learning, throughout and beyond the University. This position is embedded in the Division of Educational Innovation and works closely with the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR). The colleague in this role will be part of a core team of Learning Scientists, Designers, Communications experts and Product Strategists who work together to integrate and evolve SAIL into the learning fabric of Northeastern in alignment with the University’s Academic Plan.
Northeastern University is a national leader in experiential education with over 100 years of leadership in Co-operative education. The university is continually evolving the ways in which learners can learn and grow through the myriad experiences that are available to them while at Northeastern. The SAIL initiative is Northeastern’s next step in preparing students to be adaptable and flexible for lifelong learning wherever their paths might take them. This model is anchored in helping learners to see the connections between their experiences and, in doing, so strengthens their capacity to integrate and effectively communicate what they know and how they know it.
To achieve this, the University has created its own holistic development framework and accompanying tools, which together, are allowing for the evolution of its culture of experiential learning. The initiative unites educators who engage with learners in all different venues of the student experience, ranging from the classroom to co-curricular activities, research, service, global experiences, student employment, athletics, student organizations and co-operative education to name a few. By integrating a common framework and language into the work that they do with learners (and with one another), these educators are able to support learners as they integrate their learning across all experiences, and help them to articulate the skills and proficiencies that they are developing across these varied experiences.
The Associate Director for Experiential Integration will have the unique opportunity in this initiative to support the development of programs that will help educators and learners alike seek and identify the points of integration with the platform across the different experiences. This includes but is not limited to:
• Working with faculty to integrate the use of SAIL into their experiential opportunities including lab experiences, design opportunities, global engagement opportunities, and courses;
• Working with academic advisors to facilitate their use of the SAIL platform and framework to strengthen advisees’ ability to define their learning pathways;
• Working with co-op coordinators to identify and implement ways in which the SAIL platform and framework could promote reflection and integration of learner co-op experiences with other learning opportunities throughout the university (including courses);
• Integrating SAIL into the work of student life and other educators so that students can leverage their offerings in a way that makes the learning explicit, learning that may have otherwise been assumed to be implicit; and
• Working with career advisors to leverage students’ experiences with the SAIL platform and framework to best articulate their preparedness for different career tracks.
Together with the core team, the Associate Director will:
• Develop and implement the SAIL integration strategy for multiple university programs and programs;
• Provide programming for educators and co-educators on how SAIL can be integrated into practice
• Contribute to the overall design and development strategy for the SAIL initiative, particularly as it relates to the integration of experiential learning opportunities (e.g., Co-op, Dialogue of Civilizations, XN projects, research, student employment) with one another
• Contribute to the design of strategies for coaching learners through the integration process through advising, co-op coordination, lab mentorships, and other mentor/mentee relationships
• Contribute to the creation of new types of experiential opportunities across the Northeastern learning ecosystem (e.g., through integration with alumni, integration with pre-college opportunities, cross-and co-curricular opportunities, integration with employer partners)
The ideal candidate for the Associate Director should have the ability to understand the big picture and overall vision, while managing the day-to-day implementation of the established strategies.
Additional preferred qualifications:
• MS/MA/MBA in the area of Psychology, Sociology, Education, Learning Sciences, Communication, Design or a related field;
• Experience working with different types of educators and advisors including academic advisors, career advisors, student life, employers, etc.
• Exceptional communication skills with proven ability to effectively articulate complex messages to a variety of audiences;
• Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, cross-functional team environment, where flexibility, creativity, and resourcefulness are required for success;
• Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships, influence others and move others toward a common vision or goal;
• Solid project management skills with the ability to coordinate resources, establish schedules, track deliverables;
• Ability to proactively seek external industry knowledge and continued learning; and
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in an educational setting.
