Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern’s comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:

GRI is a new and complex enterprise that involves cross-university coordination involving all nine colleges, five institutes, and the Office of the Provost. Additionally there is a substantial external mission that requires forming and sustaining formal partnerships with universities and research institutes from around the world. As one of the new inter-college institutes, GRI is an important new initiative of Northeastern University’s President and the Board of Trustees. GRI must adroitly manage fiscal and human resource issues that involve the entire university enterprise in carrying out its mandate to raise the visibility of Northeastern’s interdisciplinary research among innovators, potential public and private sector sponsors, and foundations and individual donors who support its mission in the metro-Boston area, nationally, and internationally. Thus, it requires an extremely experienced person with unique capabilities, outstanding professional competency, and perceptive interpersonal skills to administer its financial, grant and human resource management needs. In short, GRI needs an able Assistant Director for Finance and Administration who will work under the direction of the Associate Director of Operations in supporting GRI leadership in executing the GRI mission. Generally, the Assistant Director for Finance and Administration will be responsible for implementing an orderly and trackable business environment with best-in-class practices; implementing processes for effective financial and sponsored award management, executing all aspects of budgeting, financial transactions, and analysis, control and reporting of operational and project budgets; and overseeing human resource management processes for GRI. The Assistant Director must have an understanding and a demonstrated ability to operate effectively across the complex array of University financial processes and systems as well as the human resource processes. This includes a knowledge of key Northeastern University systems used in financial and personnel management (e.g. Banner SSID and eprints, Cognos, Concur etc.), and an ability to execute the intensive transactional details of financial management while maintaining a ”big picture” perspective necessary to supporting the overall management of GRI’s operations and research projects. Finally, the Assistant Director must bring demonstrated experience with anticipatory budget management and forecasting needed for the growth which GRI will be undergoing. Familiarity with financial and personnel processes of Northeastern University’s colleges and/or its grant management processes is a definite plus. While this position requires a focus on execution in the near term, given GRI’s projected rapid growth as a major university research institute, the management scope of this position will also likely grow.

Bachelor’s degree and 5 – 10 years of financial and operations management experience required, in an academic environment, including robust experience with grants management; Master’s Degree preferred. Significant budgeting and quantitative analytical experience. Demonstrated computer literacy with experience in database and spreadsheet software, with emphasis on financial applications. Handles extremely confidential information. Strong attention to detail, well organized, ability to handle and prioritize a wide variety of responsibilities. Problem solver, capable of working with senior management on identifying recommendations and taking the initiative to overcome obstacles that may prevent an Institute from reaching its goals. Able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management.
