About the Opportunity:

The Global Student Success (GSS) Assistant Director is part of a comprehensive team whose aim is to provide holistic English language, academic, and cultural support services and outreach to all international and non-native English-speaking students across all colleges, in all programs, and at all levels at Northeastern University. GSS also supports scholars, faculty, and staff in developing intercultural competencies and global understanding. The Assistant Director provides administrative oversight for the daily operations of the department, including the International Tutoring Center (ITC), achieving goals, and acting as a liaison between GSS and students, scholars, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities:

S/he maintains and develops accurate databases, reports, and records and connects the Northeastern community to academic and non-academic resources on campus, online and in the community. The Assistant Director should be proactive in providing data based decisions and research to aid in GSS attaining and exceeding its goals. The Assistant Director should be student focused and forward thinking to actively work to review and improve GSS data and operational policies and procedures. Additionally, the Assistant Director actively reaches out and collaborates closely with instructors, other departments, and colleges to ensure a coordinated approach to student success.

The Assistant Director participates in the development, planning, and implementation of various English language support services and resources and GSS programming. Additionally, the Assistant Director participates in research and projects that further extend GSS services; these could include (but are not limited to) workshops, class visit presentations, developing special events, teaching specialized courses, or representing GSS and the ITC at student resource events. The Assistant Director should take proactive steps to improve communication to, and between, students, tutors and staff as well as take an active role in enhancing the existing systems and reporting mechanisms to better serve GSS’ students. The Assistant Director should serve as students’ advocate and liaison to internal and external constituencies and as an agent for change necessary to promote success for international students, while maintaining the mission of Global Student Success, NU Global, and Northeastern University.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience working in Higher Education (student development, student services, campus operations, international student services, data analytics, etc.). Master’s degree or higher preferred in a related field (i.e. Intercultural Communications, Linguistics, Data Analytics, project Management, etc.). Demonstrated experience working with international students and non-native English speakers and sensitivity to their distinct needs. Strong organization, detail orientation, excellent follow-through, analytical skills, positive attitude, and effective interpersonal communication (both verbal and written) is necessary for GSS’ evolving environment. Computer skills and experience in working with databases and student management systems is necessary (Power BI, Salesforce, WC Online, etc.). Ability to learn and effectively utilize the College and University-level computer systems in day-to-day student support is necessary. Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and to juggle many activities simultaneously, take initiative, follow through with projects and to work as an integral member of a team is necessary.

The Global Student Success Assistant Director should be culturally sensitive and aware of issues pertaining to international and non-native English-speaking students, including language limitations, adjustment issues, international student’s perceptions of authority figures, and difference in educational systems.

Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
