About the Opportunity:

This temporary role provides support to the international student advisor in the Office of Global Services in Seattle.


Note:  This position will be based at the Seattle Campus of Northeastern University.

Under the direct supervision of the International Student Advisor at the Seattle campus, the Assistant International Student Advisor (Assistant Advisor) will provide a wide range of support to the functioning of the Office of Global Services (OGS) at the Seattle campus.  In an often-dynamic environment and with great attention to detail, the position will interact with staff of the OGS and of the Seattle campus to provide students and visitors of the OGS in Seattle with the highest caliber of customer service.

The Assistant Advisor will complete the initial screening and review of applications for all benefits requested by international students, including but not limited to initial and transfer I-20 requests, on campus and off campus work authorization, and travel endorsements.  The position will work closely with University Co-op Coordinators and SEVIS Contacts to ensure student applications are complete and processed in a timely manner.  Utilizing both department and university-wide systems they will help to determine if students are maintaining their status and eligible for the benefits they are applying for.  They will aid in data entry into the OGS to SEVIS batching system.

The position will serve as a frontline resource for students and others who seek the services of the OGS on matters regarding F-1 visa compliance and international student support, by screening immigration-related inquiries, including those coming in person, via email, and by phone, as needed.  The position will assist the International Student Advisor with drop-in student advising by answering basic inquiries, redirecting inquiries as needed, and signing in students in need of OGS advisor support.

As needed, the Assistant Advisor will support other OGS activities, including orientations, information sessions, and other events as assigned.  They will also act as a mentor and trainer for any OGS – Seattle student workers hired during their tenure.

Finally, the position will assist with managing the workflow of and providing operational support to OGS – Seattle, including monitoring alerts and assigning cases to the Advisor as needed, mailing documents and reconciling express mail invoices, assisting in scheduling info sessions, and other duties as assigned.


Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years professional work experience. Some knowledge of or training in international student advising (F-1 visa classifications) plus a strong customer service background is preferred.  Must be extremely detail-oriented, have exceptional organizational skills, and be willing / able to adapt to support a small team on a dynamic, growing regional campus of a large, innovative private university.  Applicants should have good judgment, discretion, cultural sensitivity, flexibility, and patience. Should be familiar and comfortable working with computer database systems and a PC-based network environment. Microsoft office proficiency preferred.
