About the Opportunity:

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) invites applications for tenured or tenure-track appointments at the assistant, associate, or full professor level in the areas of

·         Control Systems, robotics, nonlinear dynamics, and vibrations, with possible applications in medical robotics, autonomous and network systems, human-robot systems, and intelligent control systems;

·         Mechanics and Manufacturing, applied mechanics with an emphasis on computation, and/or advanced manufacturing;

·         Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on but not limited to fluid/solid interactions, marine life and environmental fluid mechanics, biofluid and micro-/nano-fluidics, and energy systems.

Applicants should submit a detailed Curriculum Vita, a clear statement of teaching and research interests and objectives, along with names and contact information of at least three professional references. Applications received by January 15, 2020 will receive full consideration. The target starting date is the 2020-2021 academic year, but the positions will remain open until filled. A PhD in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering or a closely related field by the start date is required. Excellence in research, teaching, and collaborative expertise that spans traditional as well as emerging thrust areas is highly desirable.  Successful senior candidates should be established researchers with a strong record of funding, scholarly work, national/international recognition, and technical leadership.


Preferred Qualifications:

Training beyond PhD degree in an academic/industry setting in which the candidate has demonstrated independence, teaching/mentoring, and/or creative work is preferred.

The MIE Department ( is a successful, vibrant, and diverse academic enterprise. With over 22 new faculty additions since 2014, the department is on a rapid growth trend, and currently comprises 30 full-time co-op and teaching faculty and 54 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, of which over 30% are women. Backed up by strong external research funding and programs in core areas as well as in robotics, data analytics, energy systems, and engineering management, the department is home to a large and highly-talented student pool, currently enrolling about 160 Ph.D., 1,500 M.S., and 1,400 B.S. students.  Our U.S. News and World Reports graduate rankings have progressed to 43 (Mechanical Engineering) and 33 (Industrial Engineering). 


A research contract vehicle of $125M from the Veterans Health Administration and $20M from the Army Research Office awarded in recent years have significantly accelerated research activities in the MIE Department, with annual expenditures reaching around $13M. In addition, the department is home to two research centers: 1) Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing and 2) Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute.
