Chair, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences’ School of Pharmacy is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Responsibilities:

 

The new chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences will have a unique opportunity to significantly influence the direction and trajectory of an already strong department. The chair will: (i) provide sound fiscal management of the Department; (ii) provide leadership and vision in the development and implementation of a Department strategic plan that ensures sustained research funding and growth; (iii) ensure excellence in teaching; (iv) ensure that faculty have mentoring and support necessary for their success; (v) work closely with the Deans and Chairs of other units to advance the mission of the University; and (vi) have excellent administrative skills.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated strategic vision in their research enterprise which should be well-established, well-funded and internationally recognized. They should also have demonstrated excellence in and a significant record of teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a collaborative research background that spans multiple aspects of pharmaceutical sciences. Previous experience managing a federally-funded research group or center is essential.  A doctorate degree in a pharmaceutical sciences field is required. Appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure is required.

Salary Grade:

Salary will be commensurate with education, training, and experience and includes an outstanding benefit package.  Evaluation will begin immediately and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Additional Information:

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is known internationally for its research in the areas of drug discovery and targeted delivery, bioanalytical chemistry, nanomedicine, neuro- and immuno-pharmacology, molecular imaging, and toxicology. Currently, the Department includes 21 full-time faculty (8 of whom have interdisciplinary appointments) and 4 Centers of Research Excellence: the Center for Drug Discovery, Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, Center for Translational Neuroimaging, and the New England Inflammation and Tissue Protection Institute.  Graduate program specializations include Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, Biotechnology, and an Interdisciplinary option.  Currently there are 49 Ph.D. and 104 MS students enrolled. In addition to teaching in the graduate programs, department faculty also teach in the professional Doctor of Pharmacy program. Federal and private research funding is robust in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which, together with the Department of Pharmacy Practice, ranks 24th in NIH funding among all US Schools of Pharmacy, and 1st among Schools of Pharmacy in private institutions.

The Bouvé College of Health Sciences has more than 200 faculty members and 1,500 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

 

Northeastern University is situated on the Avenue of the Arts in Boston’s historic Back Bay, four blocks from the Longwood Medical Area, encompassing Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Boston, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and eight blocks from the Boston Medical Center. Several other major research-intensive universities and healthcare institutions are within a 5-mile radius.  The immediate Boston area also is home to over 400 pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
